After saving Michael from the Lycan master Lucian (who bit Michael and infected him with the Lycan virus), Selene must decide whether to do her "duty" as a Death Dealer and kill him or to risk her life to save him. She finds herself attracted to a medical intern, Michael Corvin ( Scott Speedman) who is being targeted by the Lycans. The main plot revolves around Selene ( Kate Beckinsale), a vampire " Death Dealer", or Lycan hunter, a job she is very good at due to her hatred for the whole species, whom she believes slaughtered her family. It is the first film in the Underworld series. This news originated over at Variety.Underworld is a 2003 action- horror film about the secret history of Vampires and a type of werewolf known as Lycans (an abbreviated form of lycanthrope).
We haven't received any updates on that front since the announcement though.

Len Wiseman stated last year that he is currently developing an Underworld TV series which would be more adult in tone and would represent a big departure from the movies. There are other ways to continue the story. Just because Kate Beckinsale is done, it doesn't mean there can't be another movie, it just wouldn't have her in it. To date, the Underworld movies have grossed $540 million at the global box office, peaking with 2012's Awakening, which made $160 million.

She most recently returned to the role in last year's Underworld: Blood Wars, which actually brought in a franchise-low $81 million at the global box office and wasn't particularly well-received, to say the least. At the very least, don't expect Kate Beckinsale to suit back up as Selene in the future, as the actress has firmly ruled out a return to the franchise. Those who have been holding out hope for a new Underworld movie may want to prepare for disappointment.
